Amitabh Bachchan probably thinks everyone knows his views on everything from movies to politics, as he is often surprised by the questions desi reporters abroad, especially in New York, throw at him.
Is he ever going to direct a film, a reporter asked him at a press conference to announce the airing of the hit Indian quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati 2 in America.
"Never," said Amitabh with a haven't-I-said-this-before kind of look. He had enough trouble managing acting, he added with a chuckle.
Another reporter wanted to know how he succeeded in everything he had tried. Amitabh looked amused. It was not true that he had succeed in everything he had touched, he answered, "but god has often been kind to me."
It would not be a bad idea if a few contests of Kaun Banega Crorepati 2 are held in America, said Bachchan, responding to a fan's complaint that the show, which will be aired from December 2 in New York, is not interactive.
He was all for getting overseas audiences involved in the show, Amitabh added at the press conference organised by DirecTV at the headquarters of Fox.
The event was scheduled at noon but Amitabh arrived an hour later.
"Perhaps he has got into a limo," said a journalist. "At this hour, it is nearly impossible to go anywhere in a limo without stopping at every turn. He may be the most punctual person on earth but in a limo, he is like a prisoner."
Amitabh seemed relaxed, and often smiled and laughed as he answered the questions.
He was asked how the second schedule of KBC was different from the first one.
Among the several features that are different from the first segment of the show, Amitabh said with a smile, was his wardrobe: "I am wearing a lot of leather."
The show itself is lighter in tone; the previous segment was rather tense, he said. "That was good, too," he added, but the producers wanted the new segment to be light and relaxed from the start.
He went along with the decision and enjoyed the new schedule as much as he did with the first one. "It is far more laidback than the first show," he said.
Amitabh also reminisced how the success of KBC had surprised him much more than anyone else.
The superstar has been in New York City for about a month, shooting for Karan Johar's upcoming Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna. The film also stars Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan and Arjun Rampal.
