Tom Hanks was named the new vice-president of the American Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences
The five time nominee and two-time Oscar winner (for "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump" respectively) will serve the organisation that controls the Oscars.
Hanks starring in a film version of The Da Vinci Code, has formerly acted as the governor of the actor's branch of the Academy.
The Academy elected Sid Ganis as new president, replacing Frank Pierson, who served a maximum four one-year terms.
Academy spokesman John Pavlik said that, one of Ganis' first tasks would be to hire a producer for the 78th annual Oscar awards show, due to go on air on March 5.
