The Al Jazeera Network will launch its Documentary Channel on Jan 1 from its headquarters in Doha, only six weeks after the successful launch of its English version.
With the aim of becoming the leader in its field, the 24-hour channel will champion the promotion of documentary culture in the Arab world and beyond and will pay particular attention to the Middle East, especially on its cultural diversity.
“As the first service of its kind in the region, Al Jazeera Documentary will broadcast programmes focused on different aspects of human activity, including social, political, cultural, scientific, historical and environmental,” said the international broadcast station in a press release made available to Bernama here.
According to the statement, the channel which will broadcast in Arabic, will sponsor talent and work in partnership with the documentary industry and film players from across the world to develop programmes.
Al Jazeera Network’s Director General Wadah Khanfar, in the same statement, said “building on the spirit of Al Jazeera, the Documentary Channel will focus on under-reported stories in the region and elsewhere. it will open a new window on the human experience wherever it might be, and provide another avenue for mutual understanding between people and cultures”.
Wadah said the channel would extend Al Jazeera’s vision and mission as well as complement what the broadcast station has accomplished over the last 10 years.
He said the channel would present the other side of reality by transcending the immediacy of news coverage and digging into the heart of human stories.
“its informative and educational approach will be driven by hope and the broader human horizon, focusing on issues that are usually marginalised and ignored,” he added.
