Double Oscar-winner Tom Hanks will play a real-life rogue Texas congressman in the upcoming movie “Charlie Wilson’s War,” made by Universal Pictures and based on the book by George Crile.
Hanks will find himself at the centre of a political scandal involving sex, drugs and alcohol in the movie.
The movie is based on Charles Wilson, dubbed as “Good Time Charlie” by detractors whose liking for alcohol and women earned him the nickname.
Wilson saw his political career almost disintegrate in the early 1980s when he was caught in a hot tub tryst with two cocaine-sniffing showgirls in Las Vegas. He survived the scandal and ended up overseeing the largest and most successful covert CIA operation in history; his efforts to fund resistance fighters in Afghanistan hastened the fall of the Iron Curtain.
The film will be written by Aaron Sorkin, will be produced by Hanks’ Playtone banner and Gary Goetzman.
The movie is set to start filming early next year after Hanks completes shooting for “The Da Vinci Code” directed by Oscar winner Ron Howard and based on best seller by Dan Brown.
The film is set for release in Spring 2006.
