Actor Salman Khan has been confirmed to play the coveted lead role in the remake of the Telugu hit POKHiRi, to be directed by Prabhu Deva. Salman will play the role essayed by Mahesh Babu in the Telugu version of the film (directed by its original writer-director, Puri Jagannadh) and actor Vijay in the Tamil version of the film.

Salman’s business manager, Vikas confirmed that he had been signed to play the role a couple of days ago. “it is true that Salman has been confirmed to play the main lead in the remake of POKHiRi. it is no doubt a very big role and a very challenging one at that for Salman. He is eagerly looking forward to it,” Vikas revealed.

it may be recalled that the rights of the film were recently acquired by producer Boney Kapoor at an unheard of price from its maker, Puri Jagannath, after which there was tremendous speculation about the actor who would be signed to play the central character in the film.

POKHiRi which grossed the highest ever collection in 75 years for a south film in Andhra Pradesh, tells the story of a ruthless mafia man who tries to knock the mafia by being a part of it. However there is also a soft corner to this reckless criminal who is rigid about certain principles in life. The unique characterization of Mahesh Babu in the original film supported by his sharp one-liners, clicked instantly with the audiences, making it a huge success.

Meanwhile Salman’s close friends in Hyderabad have welcomed the news of his being confirmed for the Hindi remake of the film. According to Hasan Saberi, a close friend of the Khan family, for whom Salman recently walked the ramp to promote his range of opticals, Salman has a tremendous draw in Hyderabad, which could be gauged by the manner in which his fans stormed his Hyderabad show and invaded the stage. “That’s one of the reasons exhibitors here run his films for weeks together simply because they know of his invincible following at the box-office,” he says.
