View Full Version : Ash - Forever
Ash glows at the mahurat of Umrao Jaan
Subhash K Jha |
At the mahurat of JP Dutta's new film, Umrao Jaan, leading lady Aishwarya Rai looked slim and radiant. She had flown back the night before from the shooting of The Last Legion in Slovakia straight to the event.
Ash stayed the whole day -- chatting and enjoying the attention -- and left the place only at 7.30 pm. "It's good to have her as part of our team. She gives out such positive vibes," JP's wife Bindiya Dutta said.
Throughout the day, all eyes were glued on Ash and Shabana Azmi who play daughter and mother in the film.
The turn-out was impressive. Besides Shabana and Ash, the rest of the cast -- Suniel Shetty, Arshad Warsi, Divya Dutta and Puru Raj Kumar -- also made their appearance.
But the film's leading man, Abhishek Bachchan, was missing though he kept calling and messaging the Duttas from Goa, promising to land in Mumbai before the event was over. But by evening, it was clear Abhishek wouldn't make it.
"Never mind," JP smiled fondly. "He's my boy. I can feel his presence right now!"
An old-world charm clung to the studios. It could have been something to do with Anu Malik's song that was being recorded. As Richa Sharma's voice rose to a crescendo, the congregation broke into collective goosebumps. Anu Malik's daughter Anmol accompanied Richa in the song. Anmol earlier sang in Biwi No 1.
"Javedsaab and Anu Malik have worked really hard. We've already finalised nine tunes for Umrao. This is the first song," JP said.
At the end of the day, the director looked jubilant but exhausted. "We have to match up to the music of those two other great classics about the tawaif -- Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan and Pakeezah. We have to make sure that the music isn't reminiscent of those two but ghazal toh ghazal hi rahega na?"
If Asha Bhosle was the voice of Umrao in Muzaffar Ali's film, Alka Yagnik will sing for Aishwarya in JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan.
The film goes on the floors in November. "I've my actors' dates till April. I will go on shooting for as long as it takes. This is a new genre for me, and I feel like a traveller taking an unknown road," JP says.
I am having the time of my life: Aishwarya Rai
Seldom has this inherently free-spirited diva sounded happier. Her tinkling laughter rings loud and clear over the phone line from Slovakia where she's now shooting for the last lap of her first bona- fide international project The Last Legion.
Could her asli glee have something to do with her name being cleared in the murky tape controversy back home?
"Ha!" she interjects instantly. "I will only say one thing to this. I've always had faith in God. He always knows the truth. I trust completely in His judgement."
No. The pleasure is entirely to do with the way the shooting of The Last Legion has gone.
"We've completed a truly exhausting and exhilarating schedule in Tunisia. And now we've moved to Slovakia. You know, it was warm in Tunisia…. actually very hot. And now right after that, it's freezing cold in Tunisia. I guess I'm trapped in an aura of extremities," she laughs loudly.
Is it worthwhile to brave the vagaries of the weather in strange lands?
"Of course it is! It's all so strange and new and exciting. And yet so familiar. I've always worked with units where I'm totally at home. Even away from home I'm lucky to feel so relaxed."
Aishwarya has worked with foreign units before, mainly Gurinder Chaddha's Bride & Prejudice and Chadha's husband's Mistress Of Spices where the entire unit was composed of foreigners. But The Last Legion is her first assignment outside India where she doesn't play an Indian character.
"True. But you know me… I don't differentiate from one unit to another… or between one language and another. For me working with Rituparno Ghosh in Bengali was as important as doing an English-language film. Both demand and get an equal amount of my attention."
She's gung-ho about her co-stars Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley. "They're wonderful actors and terrific friends. I'm having the time of my life. But you know what? I'm homesick. I'm looking forward to returning home when I start work on Umrao Jaan."
From the sword wielding medieval European warrior in The Last Legion to the Mughalesque courtesan in Umrao Jaan is quite a leap.
"Oh, I enjoy taking leaps into the unknown," Ash laughs.
Ash's Current Assignments:
Jagmohan Mundhra's Provoked
Paul Berges' The Mistress Of Spices
Doug Lefler's The Last Legion
J.P. Dutta's Umrao Jaan
Sanjay Gadhvi's Dhoom 2
Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodha-Akbar
Raj Kumar Santoshi's Saamna
ALL NEW UMRAO JAAN
=================
Any remake, be it film or music, faces the obvious challenge -- that of being compared to the original. Filmmaker J P Dutta has no such fear, which is why he has decided to remake the 1981 Muzaffar Ali classic Umrao Jaan.
rediff.com compares the original roles with the new actors in Dutta's remake.
Umrao Jaan: From Rekha to Aishwarya Rai
Aishwarya Rai steps into Rekha's shoes to play Amiran aka Umrao Jaan. It seems a tough task, no doubt, for the former Miss World.
Rekha's performance in the film not only won her a National Award but also fetched her wide critical acclaim. While viewing the film, one fails to dissociate actress Rekha from Amiran.
Will Ash do Umrao justice? Only time will tell.
Nawab Sultan: From Farooq Shaikh to Abhishek Bachchan
Abhishek may be the toast of Bollywood today, but will he be able to do what Farooq Shaikh did so subtly?
Farooq was the epitome of elegance and romanticism, and the role is still etched in audience's minds.
Of late, Abhishek has made his presence felt in the industry. His films like Dhoom, Bunty Aur Babli and Sarkar are hits, and he even won critical acclaim for his role in Yuva.
Khanum Jaan: From Shaukat Kaifi to Shabana Azmi
While acting, Shaukat Kaifi may have forgotten her real identity, so wonderful was her depiction of Umrao Jaan's mother Khanum Jaan. Her depiction of pain, suffering and dilemma wrenched many hearts.
There could not have been a better choice than Shabana replacing her mother in the new version. Bollywood has few actresses of her calibre. In an interview to rediff.com, Shabana refuted recent reports of having told J P Dutta 'no one can play my mother's role other than me.'
She insisted Rekha had called her to say she should play the part of Khanam.
Gohar Mirza: From Naseeruddin Shah to Arshad Warsi
Seems like a good choice. Of late, Warsi has had a number of tricks up his sleeve. People were floored by his performance in Raju Hirani's Munnabhai MBBS and the low-keyed Sehar.
We have yet to see him play a negative role yet though. And it would be nice to see him equal Naseer's evil act.
Quiet informative.. hey why dont you start writing something professinal, maybe 2 paragraphs!!!!!

You'll have plenty of Aishwarya Rai in 2006

Don’t worry if 2005 was an uneventful year for the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai on screen. You’ll have plenty of Ash to feast your eyes upon in 2006
First, Ash is all set to make a big splash on the international arena in 2006 with three Hollywood movies featuring her to be released during the year.
With this she will also emerge as the only Indian heroine to achieve the distinction.
The Hollywood films The Last Legion , Provoked , and Mistress of Spices , are being lined up for release this year and her spirited performance in the films will make her an international star of repute, Ash's Business Manager Hari Singh said in Mumbai.
After making her debut in Hollywood with Gurinder Chadha 's Bride and Prejudice , Ash was determined to make a mark on the international circuit, he said.
Ash’s journey from Miss World in 1994 to a super model and eventually Bollywood's 'numero uno' heroine to a brand ambassador and an international star has been really exciting, Singh said.
Back home, Ash has several big-budget films like J P Dutta 's magnum opus Umrao Jaan opposite Abhishek Bachchan in which she portrays the title role, Aditya Chopra 's Dhoom 2 opposite Hrithik Roshan , Ashutosh Gowarikar 's Jodha Akbar , again co-starring Hrithik, will catapult her to greater heights this year, Singh claimed.
Several leading filmmakers, including Ketan Mehta , Mani Ratnam and Ratan Jain , are planning big films with Ash as a central character, he said.
Ash flew down to Mumbai from Jaipur on the eve of the New Year to be with her parents, brother and sister-in-law. She took a day off from the month-long schedule of 'Umrao Jaan'.
Ash celebrated the New Year with her family members at her residence in suburban Bandra.
''Aishwarya is a very religious person attached to Indian customs and tradition,'' Singh said. After performing pooja at home on the New Dear's day, she went to Siddhivinayak Temple to pay obeisance to Lord Ganesh and participated in the first aarti at 0530 hrs.
Ash is leaving for Brazil in the last week of this month for the shooting of 'Dhoom 2'.
Aishwarya playing the period lady
Aishwarya Rai stands way ahead from other Bollywood actresses in terms of the offer that she bags. With ‘Umrao Jaan’, ‘Jodha-Akbar’ and ‘The Last Legion’ tied tightly under her belt, Aishwarya belongs to a different league of actor in the industry. And all she is doing for her career is on the strength of dedication and drive. The team of ‘Umrao Jaan’ is all praises for her as she gears up to get into the skin of the character she plays in the film. We catch up with Aishwarya, as she looks stunning in the location of Rajasthan, shooting for the film.
Excerpts from the Interview:
Is playing a character like Umrao in ‘Umrao Jaan’ an uphill task?
Not really. When you’ve a director like J P Dutta handling the reigns of direction, you’re rest assured that you’ll deliver the best. He elaborates the scene and details in such a manner, that the only work remaining is to go and carry the shot in front of the camera.
Are you trying to imitate Rekha in the original ‘Umrao Jaan’?
It’s impossible to imitate somebody like her. So I’m better handling the things my way. The story and dance movements of this film are different from the one in Muzaffar Ali’s film.
The costume of the film is likely to create the aura of Devdas?
Designer Anna Singh has really made some gorgeous outfits going with the story of the film. They’re just ethereal.
How much do you like the locations of Rajasthan?
I’m the liking the place a lot. I’ve to wrap up a long shooting schedule here and so I’m trying to get used to the place. We’ll shoot here for the film till January. I’ll also be here again for Ashutosh Gowraiker’s ‘Jodha-Akbar’. Shooting for that film will be again another brave act.
Won’t you be looking similar in ‘Umrao Jaan’ and ‘Jodha-Akbar’ due to the appeal of both the films?
Not at all because I’ll be playing different characters in both of them. Apart from the similar heavy costumes and the film belonging to the period genre, nothing will be similar between them.
What about ‘Prithviraj-Sanjukta’ as both Santoshi and Chandraprakash Diwedi want you for the role?
That is another interesting period film. But I cannot do the same film for both of them. So when they approached me I made it clear that they’re approaching me with a film with the same subject. It’s upon them to decide what to do next. As a filmmaker I respect both, whereas Rajkumar Santoshi is closer to me. I’m looking forward to work with him, as I had to drop ‘Saamna’ at the last hour. Dr Diwedi had offered me ‘Pinjar’ formerly but I couldn’t do the film due to dates. But about signing a new film is out of question now, as I’m already very busy with ‘Umrao Jaan’, ‘Dhoom 2’ and then ‘Jodha-Akbar’.
How much have ‘Dhoom 2’ progressed?
Before getting to Rajasthan, I had been shooting for the film in Mumbai. It was fun and rocking shooting the film. Its full of fun and energy.
How much are you enjoying working with J P Dutta?
He is awesome as a director. What makes him special is that he is so good with his treatment towards the actors. He is as good in etching female characters as males. His choice of music is also profound. I’m having a lovely time working with him.
How is it working in the Hollywood film The Last Legion?
Working in Hollywood is not an easy task, how much big an actress you may be at home. The audiences there know me but don’t know the kind of films that I do. So you have to work a lots harder to make yourself felt to the audience so that they can perceive you. I’ve just wrapped up the film there.

Good atleast someone is reading :)
JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan
With Aishwarya Rao and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead, the film is set to recreate the magic once spun in the 1981 classic by Muzaffar Ali. It has an impressive cast: Shabana Azmi (she plays Umrao's mother, a role first played by her mother Shaukat Kaifi), Suniel Shetty, Arshad Warsi, Divya Dutta, Himani Shivpuri, Puru Raaj Kumar and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.
The shooting took place mostly in Jaipur. If Asha Bhonsle was the voice of the first Umrao, Alka Yagnik will sing for Aishwarya Rai songs penned by Javed Akhtar and set to music by Anu Malik. Incidentally, Malik's daughter Anmol too has lent her voice to a young Ash in the film, marking her first step into the music scene.
Ashutosh Gowariker's Akbar-Jodha
Taking its cue from Mughal-E-Azam, Gowariker is set to launch another mega cinematic event. It will focus on Mughal Emperor Akbar's relationship with his Hindu wife Jodha. The director, it is heard, has hired a research team comprising historians and scholars from Delhi, Lucknow, Agra and Jaipur to guide him on a subject as intricate and complicated as the Mughal era.
The film will star Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead. Will it wipe away the painful memories of a well-made yet unsuccessful Swades? Considering it is in the production stage, we'll have to wait for that answer.
What about Akbar Khans taj Mahal; it costed 75 crores and ended up as a big time flop. Mythological epics r a big risk to make! Ashutosh better beware...
hmmm I agree with Ankit.....but on second thoughts, why dun these movie makers try black n white for a change.... with really good looking girl like Aishwarya portraying the character of Umrao Jaan.... just think would it not be something totally d.i.ff.e.r.en.t. ? (hint: check the nakshatra jewellary ad.)
Otherwise too, many ppl wud appreciate the bnw cinema, for a change.... wotsay guys? -- a serious subject, in bnw print, that too looking fantastic... hmmm
:D
cheers!
DHOOM-2
========
In spite of being revered as one of the most beautiful women in the world, Aishwarya Rai's Cannes Film Festival appearance in 2003 made heads turn for all the wrong reasons – a horrendous designer creation with oodles of excess weight. But that was until she was signed on by Yashraj Films for Dhoom 2 and categorically instructed by Adi Chopra and director Sanjay Gadvi to loose weight. To ensure Aishwarya's transformation, noted yoga therapist, personal trainer and pilates instructor Deepika Mehta was brought in to do the needful.
Hrithik Roshan, who stars opposite Aishwarya too has shed those excesses courtesy Mehta, who she met through stylist Anaita Shroff (she is Aishwarya's stylist in Dhoom 2). Evidence of the hardwork paid off when a svelte Ash was recently spotted at Zayed Khan's wedding where she looked amazing. Talking about this transformation, Mehta says, “I am just a catalyst, it's Ash who showed dedication and interest in grooming herself the way Yashraj Films wanted her to.”
Bound by a Yashraj Films contract, Mehta refuses to divulge any details about Ash's training, like the weight of the actress before she joined the fitness regime. But Mehta admits that Aishwarya needed to shed weight, to look sexy on screen with Hrithik. “I prescribe a diet depending on the metabolism of the person. You'll have to understand that I am not a gym instructor; I don't make my clients lift weights. Ash is an amazing dancer and believes in spiritual power. She is easy to work with, once she has faith in you. I made her do a little jazz movement along with some dance steps,” she says.
Mehta who prefers privacy, used to book the gym and the adjacent area at Taj Land's End to train Aishwarya. “We required a peaceful area for the yoga session. They have a private gym, which ensures one is not disturbed,” she says. All this with soft lounge music being played in the background. “Ash loves music, and I used to play Indian fusion with spiritual chanting for her,” she informs.
Considering Aishwarya's hectic schedule, how did she find time for her fitness regime with Mehta? “It was difficult, but not impossible. I travelled with her to London for Provoked and then went to Jaipur for Umrao Jaan,” she says.
What about her presence during the Dhoom 2 shoot? “I don't think they would require me during the shooting, but if they ask me, then I shall be available,” she assures. Mehta has trained under internationally acclaimed Guru Pattabhi Jois from Mysore and has been in this field for the last ten years. “Celebrities like Madonna have been my guruji's disciple. I have mastered the Ashtanga yoga, which helps in reducing weight,” she reveals. Mehta's other clients include Yana Gupta, Avanti and Yash Birla, and the models of Kingfisher calendar too. Mehta is undoubtedly the most highest paid personal trainer. “I won't be able to quote the exact amount, because it varies according to client requirements,” she adds.
Ash sexier than Shah Rukh
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aishwarya Rai has at last beaten King Shah Rukh Khan — at least where sexiness is concerned. In E! Entertainment Television’s 101 Sexiest Celeb Bodies list, Ash ranks at No 7, while Khan is way down, at No 74.
Some of the others Ash has managed to beat include Jennifer Lopez, Gisele Bundchen, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Colin Farrell, Johnny Depp, Ashton Kutcher, Elizabeth Hurley, Justin Timberlake, Pamela Anderson, Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston and Enrique Iglesias.
In a brief chat with us, Ash’s international business manager Simone Sheffield, of Canyon Entertainment, tells hitList how the world perceives Aishwarya Rai…
Aishwarya Rai
With her being ranked No 7, how would you explain Ash’s emergence as an important global entity?
Aishwarya has made people see India and Indians in a new and positive light. I don’t think people in India understand her impact. I find it funny when I read false statements like “she can’t find work in the west” - that is far from the truth. We receive many offers for films that she simply has no interest in, or is not available.
What are the international projects that Ash shot for in 2005?
She shot for Mistress of Spices, Provoked and The Last Legion. Common sense will tell you she can’t work in Hollywood and Bollywood at the same time - there are only 12 months to the year!
Right now, she is working non-stop (Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2) and has done so for the past four years that I have known her. She is by far the most professional and certainly the hardest working actress I have ever encountered in the 30 years I have been in this business.
Ash is now dedicating 2006 to her projects in India — all of which are major films with fantastic directors and co-stars. She has enough pending offers to keep her busy past 2009.
How has the NRI community responded to Ash?
Based on the emails I have received from NRIs over the past three years, they have been ultra supportive and positive. The Indian sector in the US alone is vast and economically powerful.
We are seeing a crossover growth in their music - with many international artistes mixing eastern and western sounds and clothes. I received thousands of emails after Aishwarya draped Oprah (Winfrey) in the sari.
Aishwarya’s segment was the number one story on the 60 Minutes website, following her appearance on the show last year, and her official website, continues to get overwhelming numbers.
Aishwarya may still be the new kid on the block - but she is certainly one that everyone wants to live next to.
Aishwarya & Abhishek!
ASH-ABHI ????????
Yes, this could come true very soon. The friendship which began with Kuchh na kaho is blooming with Umrao Jaan. And all the people on the sets of the film can't stop talking about their love off the sets.
All those who have Rani and Abhishek in mind ,do note that Mrs Jaya Bachchan is also very keen on Abhi-Ash.
Abhishek developed feelings for Ash?
Aishwarya Rai is the most beautiful and sought after actress in Bollywood. Abhishek is fast picking up his father’s place of number one in the industry. And apparently both of them are said to be romancing on the sets of Umrao Jaan.
Ash and Abhishek have been shooting for J P Dutta’s Umrao Jaan in Jaipur, Rajashthan for more than a month now and people are saying that they spent a lot of time together on sets. It is rumored that both of them have developed deeper feelings for each other.
Therefore smart guy Abhishek is taking this to a next level – marriage. It is said that he will marry someone that his parents approve of and therefore he is in the process of convincing his parents. His mother (Jaya) has met Aishwarya and already approves of her.
Although Ash has been linked to many men but not one came out perfect for her. Ash- Viveik love stint ended before Ash started shooting for Umrao Jaan. Abhi also has been paired with many co-actresses but not one relationship surfaced seriously. Rani who was linked to Abhi sometime back is just his good friend, nothing more.
So when they both, Ash-Abhi met they were single and ready to mingle. And then there was the magic of romantic epic Umrao Jaan. Then they were in Rajashthan in the months of winter where love is in the air. Who can stop their new beginning?
Aishwarya
February 2, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I really have nothing to say on the matter. Nothing at all. My dignity doesn’t allow me to comment, refute or retaliate. As long as God and my family are with me, nothing else matters.” She says reacting to the stories about her split with Viveik and her link-up with Abhishek.
Ash taken aback
Aishwarya Rai, just back in Mumbai after a gruelling schedule of J P Dutta’s Umrao Jaan to shoot for Dhoom 2 is suddenly faced with a fusillade of flak that’s taken her aback.
Though she refuses to say a word against those who have portrayed her in a negative light, she does stop long enough to wonder who these “sources” and “friends” close to her are, who are making statements on her personal life.
Ash has only one close friend
After much persuasion she allows a prominent member of her family to speak on her behalf.
“Believe me, no one else has spoken to any member of the press. There’s nothing to be said. We’ve full faith in Ash’s conduct. What’s happening to her right now is stressing all of us out. Where are all these negative stories coming from. Ash has only one close friend. And that person has nothing to do with the film industry.”
Taking a deep breath, the source continues. “The fact and we all know it, is Ash and Vivek were over six months ago. Why didn’t she speak about it? When had she ever spoken about their relationship that she was supposed to speak about the break-up?
Many stars are comfortable conducting their relationships in public view. Ash is not. Is that a crime? Why is her silence being misconstrued as guilt? And for what? It’s being said she ‘used’ Vivek. Hello… for what purpose did she use him?
Absurd tales
It’s being alleged that Aishwarya instigated him to hold that press conference against Salman Khan. How utterly absurd is that? She was in Nasik shooting for Khakee and had an accident at that time.
From the hospital, she had given one press statement, just one statement… carefully worded and discreet. That’s how Ash is… take it or leave it. It’s so sad to see her being portrayed as a scheming conniving creature.
Why compare?
“They’re even comparing her equation with Salman and Vivek. What for? Just because they’re both part of her past? Is she answerable to anyone?
It’s being said that Ash even called Viveik on location after they had broken up. The only time she has met him is when he came over to discuss Shekhar Kapoor’s Paani. Why is every move of hers being twisted misconstrued and misrepresented? Fortunately for Ash, we believe in her completely. We’ve never asked her for an explanation. And that’s the only solace she has in this hour of crisis.”
As for the friendship with Abhishek… “They’re young, intelligent and extremely compatible. For God’s sake, let them be! All this loose talk is making them so self-conscious.”
Aishwarya Rai as Sonia ****hi?
03rd Feb 2006
If things go as planned, you may see the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai play the lead role of Congress President Sonia ****hi in a film which may have Abhishek Bachchan as Rajiv ****hi.
We told you in September that Italian actress and Hollywood stunner Monica Bellucci is being considered to play the lead role of Sonia.
But the London-based producer of that film Dr. J. Murli Manohar wants to opt for his perennial favourite Ash who has done the producer's ‘Jeans’ and now Provoked , and can get as Italian in looks as it gets.
"We aren't looking at the politics of Sonia ****hi. We want to make the film on the woman not the politician. Jag wants the film to reflect one catch-line.. She came for the love of her life. She stayed for the love of her land," he said.
"We've bought the rights of Rashid Kidwai's biography on Sonia ****hi," revealed Dr. Murli. "The script is being readied. Jagmohan Mundhra was supposed to direct this film before ‘Provoked’. But we thought doing Provoked would bring Jag to a new level in his career and prepare audiences to see him handle a subject as sensitive and epic as Sonia ****hi."
Dr. Murli added, "Jagmohan Mundhra is of the opinion that we should have an authentic international face to play Sonia. He has spoken to Carla Gugino, the actress from Spy Kids 2. He has also spoken to Preity Zinta in India."
But the question is after two true-life characters Umrao Jaan and Gayatri Devi will Ash play Sonia ****hi in the biographical epic on the Congress diva?
Abhishek-Aishwarya marriage is not possible!
by Debasis Jana
Few weeks back, in our weekly poll section we had put a question and asked viewers to give their opinion on the rumour about Abhishek-Aishwarya's marriage.
At the end of the week, we were surprised to see, more peoples have opined that they will not marry.
Peoples, who think they will not tie the knot are more in number than the peoples who think they will.
On the basis of the poll result, we also made a news in this space under headline 'Abhishek will not marry Aishwarya".
It created a fair amount of stir in the industry, however then nobody was in position to believe that.
But now it seems the rumormongers have suddenly woken up to our news.
As per recent rumour, Abhishek-Aishwarya marriage will never take place in reality because an astrological analysis reveals Aishwarya is from Mars (Mangal), and the person from Mars tend to cast dark shadow over their partner's career, and Bachchans don't want that to happen.
However as ever Abhishek and Aishwarya both keep mum, after all when they have opened their mouth?
Even when the film industry was abuzz with the rumour of their affair, wouldn't they keep quiet?
Aishwarya Rai's 'Provoked' to be screened at IIFA
New Delhi, June 2 (PTI): After its entry in Cannes, screening of the Aishwarya Rai-starrer 'Provoked' will be the highlight of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards ceremony to be inaugurated on June 14 in Dubai.
The film festival, besides showing famous Hindi movies like Parineeta and Bluff Master, will also provide a feast of regional movies to film lovers for the first time, an official from Wizcraft International Ltd, the event managers for IIFA, said here adding last year only one regional movie 'shwaas' in Marathi language had made entry.
Directed by Jagmohan Mundhra of 'Bawandar' fame, 'Provoked' deals with the issue of domestic violence and is based on a true story of an Indian housewife in London and has earned good reviews from critics.
Unveiling the three-day schedule for the extravaganza of Indian films, "most of the biggest Indian stars, including South Indian actors like Mammooty, Mohan Lal and even some famous Hollywood names are expected to attend the awards ceremony and the other related functions in Dubai," he said.
Apart from the annual charity function, media briefings and a rare interaction between the film stars and their fans, this year IIFA would also launch a book capturing the essence of the Indian film cinema, he said.
Trying to shed the pro-Bollywood image, 14 regional movies have been included in the festival which will also have two-day Global Business Forum in collaboration with FICCI.
"Some of the biggest business leaders, politicians and policy-makers from India, Gulf and other countries will attend the Forum," said Pradeep Srivastava, Vice-President Marketing of Idea Cellular, one of the organisers of IIFA.

Umrao Jaan shooting stopped!
by Debasis Jana
Abhishek-Aishwarya starrer 'Umrao Jaan' shooting got interrupted as the Dispute Committee of FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees) recently ordered the film's director-producer J.P. Dutta to stop function on the classic remake.
As per reports, Dutta, who owed Rs. 2.74 lakhs from some Raj Zutshi during 'LOC' production, has not paid the amount yet.
Zutshi that time filed a complaint against Dutt in Cine Artistes Association. The association got in touch with Dutta, who did not respond for a long, long time.
Hence, the association compelled to refer it to the Dispute Committee, headed by the octogenarian Chandrashekar, who finally ordered Dutta to stop shooting of the film until he dissolves the dispute with Zutshi.
The contrasting roles of Aishwarya Rai

By ApunKaChoice Bureau
The gorgeous Aishwarya Rai plays strikingly different characters in her next two releases Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2 .
J.P. Dutta s magnum opus Umrao Jaan, which is slated to release on October 20 this year, has Ash covering her face behind a veil, traditionally worn by Islamic women.
Ash is to don the piece of cloth for her forthcoming epic feature, which also stars Abhishek Bachchan and Sunil Shetty .
The film is a romantic tragedy with heavy Islamic tones.
The turnaround will come on November 24 this year when Dhoom 2 is scheduled to hit the screens.
Co-starring Abhishek , Hrithik Roshan and Bipasha Basu , Dhoom 2 has Ash looking as glamorous as ever.
Ash has recently undergone a heavy weight-reducing programme, keeping her glamorous character in view.
There are rumours that Ash has even donned a bikini in the film.
So brace yourself up to see the contrasting roles of Ash in films as different as they can get.
Aishwaryas Father Undergoes Surgery
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, August 05, 2006]
Aishwarya Rai has a close bond with her family. Its a close knit unit. And theyve always stood by her in her time of need. The ties of blood went through a testing time recently when Ashs father Krishnaraj Rai complained of uneasiness on August 3rd.
The family rushed into action and within no time, Rai senior was being taken care of by a battery of doctors at the Hinduja Hospital. But what Ash had not anticipated was that within no time her father would have to undergo a serious three hour surgery.
It is reported that Aishwarya Rai was a picture of composure as she saw her father wheeled into the operation theatre. She wished her papa all the best. Breaking the conventions, she didnt cry or break down in spite of the growing uncertainties.
Good friend Abhishek Bachchan visited the hospital at night and took control of the entire situation. Amitabh Bachchan visited the hospital yesterday to extend his support. Aishwarya plans to visit Siddhivinayak Temple once her father gets out of the hospital.
There has been a lot of talk on the Ashutosh Gowariker directed Akbar Jodha. It's a known fact that Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan star in the film. But it was still unclear who would produce the film. Now, it has been confirmed that UTV will co-produce the film along with Gowariker.
The two have come together earlier for Gowariker's last film, Swades.
Not only Hrithik Roshan even Aishwarya Rai will be seen doing dangerous stunts in Dhoom 2 .
It is not for nothing Aishwarya has been asked to lose weight for the sequel of the 2004 hit Dhoom . The actress may have slimmed down to slip into a bikini, but her former cherubic self may not have been in keeping with the actions she does in the film.
Because Ash is paired with Hrithik and plays his partner-in-crime, the pretty damsel had to be part of some of the action sequences shot on Hrithik.
One scene from the film shows Hrithik and Ash jumping off a high mountain cliff. Of course, necessary precautions were taken to shoot the scene, but the final look of the shot, to be shown in the movies promos, is very convincing.
Not only Ash, even Bipasha Basu , who plays a cop, will indulge in some spunky stuff in the film. The two ladies will also sport bikinis in few scenes.
Hrithik has already undergone arduous training in roller-blading, sand-boarding and bike stunts for the film.
All in all, the film promises an adrenalin pumping experience for the viewers.
Dhoom 2 is currently being shot in Durban. Hrithik, Ash, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra are taking part in this schedule. The film has previously been shot in Rio De Janeiro and Namibia.
Dhoom 2 is directed by Sanjay Gadhavi. The film is slated to release in November.
Ash preferred Ashutosh Gowariker to Will Smith!
Actress Aishwarya Rai preferred Ashutosh Gowariker to Hollywood actor Will Smith. Aishwarya apparently refused Will Smith to do Ashutosh Gowariker's next 'Akbar Jodha'.
Will Smith wanted Ash to play lead role in his next, however the dates he demanded from Ash, clashed with her 'Akbar Jodha' schedules. And Aishwarya wasted no time to say 'no' to Will Smith.
In a recent interview, Ashutosh Gowariker said, he felt honored that Ash didn't opt out of 'Akbar Jodha' for Will Smith's film. "I'm glad," said Ashutosh Gowariker.
In 'Akbar Jodha', Hrithik Roshan will play opposite Aishwarya Rai. Ashutosh Gowariker said in this interview, "No one can fit the roles of Akbar and Jodhabai as Hrithik and Aishwarya do".
UTV will produce the historical project, budgeted around Rs. 39 crore.
Aishwarya Rai's worldly affairs
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The highest paid Indian actress's Hollywood expedition began with style and sophistication. Rai has an official website, www.aishwaryaworld.com, which gives an elaborate description about her, including even the trophies she won during her school days. Her constant presence at international events was a further indication of her ambitions of going global.
Agent hunt: William Morris, Simone Sheffield
Projects till now: Bride and Prejudice, Mistress of Spices, Provoked (All made by Indian filmmakers based abroad)
What's up with these? Singularity with Brendan Fraser, Chaos with Meryl Streep, Last Legion with Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley
Gupshup: Apparently, Rai is in talks with Michael Douglas for a romantic comedy called Racing The Monsoon.
In her fourth international outing, Aishwarya Rai pulls out the daggers and swords, literally!
Based on Valerio Massimo Manfredi's bestseller, the movie is set in 470 AD as the Roman empire crumbles. It's the story of Rome's last emperor, 12-year-old Romulus Augustus escapes the rebels over-running the city and embarks on a perilous trek to Britain with a small band of companions to track down his last legion.
Ash stars opposite Colin Firth (of Love Actually fame) as Mira. She's a mysterious black-clad warrior who reveals herself to Augustus only at a later point in the film. Also starring Ben Kingsley, the film has Ash performing some daredevil action scenes and also wearing some revealing costumes. After Paul Mayeda Berges' Mistress Of Spices and Jagmohan Mundhra's Provoked, this will be her next big international release.
Aishwarya Rai : From a courtesan to a Byzantine warrior
17th Sept 2006 20.30 IST
By Aparajita Ghosh
From a courtesan behind the veil to a warrior with a sword, Aishwarya Rai will be seen in very contrasting roles in her coming movies.
But first it is going to be Ashs portrayal of a battered wife in Provoked that will mark her return to the big screen after her last forgettable film Mistress Of Spices . The actress is headed to London to promote the Jagmohan Mundhra-directed film, which will be distributed in UK, US and India by Eros International.
From a tortured housewife, Ash will slip into the garb of a courtesan in J P Duttas film Umrao Jaan , based on the book by Mirza Muhammad Hadi Ruswa. The film will have Ash rendering poetry in chaste Urdu. She will be wearing elegant costumes designed by Abu Jani, Sandeep Khosla and Anna Singh. The film tells the story of a young womans struggle in a Muslim household, her penchant for poetry, her unrequited love, and her disenchantment from life. Umrao Jaan is set to release in mid-October.
After this, we will see Ash take the great leap and step into the shoes of a Byzantine warrior in the Hollywood movie The Last Legion , which is set against the backdrop of the fall of Rome in 476 AD.
The film will have Ash riding horses, stalking her enemies and fighting with swords.
In the initial parts of her role in the film, Ash will be seen as a black-clad Byzantine warrior, who joins a group of faithfuls to rescue the captive Roman emperor.
Actor Colin Firth plays a legionary named Aurelius, who discovers that the person behind the black clothing is a young, beautiful woman called Mira (Ash).
Oscar winning actor Ben Kingsley, who plays the emperors mentor in the film, has already lavished praises on Aishwarya for her skills and her beauty.
The Last Legion is slated to release on January 19, 2007.
From a battered wife to a courtesan and then to a Byzantine warrior well, that is a variety any actor can boast of. We hope it will also bring Ash some box-office success. It has been due a long time.
The gorgeous Aishwarya Rai talks about her forthcoming releases and Abhishek Bachchan .
In a very amiable mood, as she unveiled Nakshatras new range of diamonds in a suburban Mumbai hotel earlier this week, Ash also spoke about her passion for the precious stone, her fluctuating weight.
On giving Bollywood a miss for almost a year, Ash is back with three big-budget releases: Umrao Jaan , Dhoom 2 and Guru .
On why people are crazy about Ash even though many of her films have bombed at the box office, Ash said, It is wonderful to be loved and Im blessed, humbled and thrilled. My job is my passion and I think people just appreciate that.
On being busy of late, the former Miss World said, I travelled extensively for the last one year and its probably the longest interval that Ive been away from home. Since the last couple of years, my producers have been following a strict start-to-finish schedule of shooting, which meant long spells at locations.
Talking about her much publicized fitness regime for Dhoom 2, Ash said, The Dhoom 2 schedule was split up into two parts. In the mean time, we had to complete Guru, for which I had to put on weight. When the shooting for Dhoom 2 resumed, I followed a fitness regime for about three weeks. Im fortunate that my body responded to it. I dont believe in strict dieting and starvation and have always indulged my sweet tooth.
Talking about her forthcoming films Ash stated, I want to reiterate that Umrao Jaan is not just the story of a bygone era. Its what so many girls go through even now. What I like most about Dhoom 2 is the way the mannerisms of the characters have brought out. The characters are not just modern, hot and racy.
On the general perception about Indian films in the international arena, Ash said, There is immense curiosity and familiarity about our films. They are not just talking about the duration of our films and our musicals, but also about the content of our films.
And last but not the least, Ash had this to say about Abhishek: Its because you are seeing us together on screen more often that people think there is something more to our professional relationship. Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek are the two actors with whom Im paired in all my forthcoming releases.
Aishwarya I was not perfect
I was not a terribly naughty child. Rather disciplined and normal. I always did my work and was a good student.
I was into most activities academic and extra curricular. I learnt dance and music for five years and I love to sing and dance though I never had my arangetram.
I used to top in my studies and always took that for granted. I was a regular student, but not too perfect as people think, yet I wasnt the sort who is punished or shaken up either.
Even as a child I enjoyed dancing and thats why I find it easy now that Im in films. As a child I used to follow mummy into the kitchen and I learned the basics of cooking just by watching her. So I can cook and sew and iron things which people find boring.
I love ironing and stitching
Im not one of these Angrezi types who doesnt know how to handle herself in the kitchen. I love ironing and stitching I find these therapeutic, though I dont get to do them much. I enjoy them.
I always had a lot of friends. I always loved music, to listen to and sing and till today if Im free Id switch on a music channel rather than anything else.
As a kid everyone called me a doll and raved about my looks but I never did think it was anything special. I always felt happier if I did well in my studies.
I was into most extra curricular activities in school; except for sports, I enjoyed most things.
After school I started modelling while still in my teens so that left little time for other things. I loved to dance and even before I modelled I had the sort of body language that models have.
I used to be teased for posing but truly it was very natural to me to walk with a swing or use my hands in a certain way.
While a student I was sure that Id get into medicine because everything about science, the human body fascinated me.
But slowly, I realised that to like a subject and making it a career are two vastly different things.
I also enjoyed the arts so I got into architecture. I was earning quite early in life and my perceptions of life have been very adult so that has made me a sort of child woman quite early.
My interactions with people have always been on a very grounded level. I was good in academics and in other co-curricular activities too. Mostly because I did generally put my best into whatever I did.
As a child and a teenager I used to get a second look wherever I went but Id got so used to this that I never really took it seriously.
The greatest high for me would be when I topped the class. Like I remember the greatest disappointment was when I didnt top in the 10th standard after having become so used to getting a rank. It made me realise the value of it.
http://www.mid-day.com/ArticleImages/images89/madhuri1504.jpgAishwarya and MadhuriLife after winning Miss World
Miss World happened to me and I realised that Im in exactly the correct profession. I take every experience as a learning experience and Im enjoying acting very much.
Consciously and subconsciously Ive adopted this mode that of studentship. I think Ive always been before my time, not only now but even as a teenager my interactions with people, my wants and desires were all more mature than others my age I was never frivolous.
Im not saying Im oh so drab and grey. Im a dreamer but I cant help it if I believe eight out of 10 times that I have been quite perceptive and God has given me that knack.
At times it seems that life would be a little easier if we were a little dim about things or a little blind so we could drift through life without seeing too much too clearly. I think it has something to do with ones upbringing and immediate surroundings and the sum total of all ones experiences.
If acting hadnt happened Id have gone through life in a routine way but Im glad acting did happen because I realise Im not cut out for routine.
As I was a good student Id immediately have enrolled for some professional course so thats what my life would have been too.
My acting ability has actually helped me to keep some kind of a balance. And yet never have I felt like a failure nor am I carried away by praise, adulation and success.
Audiences felt that my failure to make the box office tinkle was a sign of failure but I was willing to listen to constructive criticism always having been a willing student.
I was definitely listening I was all ears but I was able to see the difference between constructive criticism and just brickbats and I was able to discern, this thanks to the confidence of my directors and fans. I was already interacting with audiences because I was seen as a star due to my Miss World status.
Ive been asked often how all the attention I get feels like, and I cannot deny that Ive always had a lot of attention perhaps thats why it has worked as a boon. Instead of making me bigheaded its worked in a contrary fashion in that I dont feel anything at all.
http://www.mid-day.com/ArticleImages/images89/rani1504.jpgRani Mukerji and Aishwarya Im not conceited at all. Attention the horizons of which cannot be gauged it could be within the four walls of your house or your street, your city, your country your world - what you can only experience is those two eyes looking at you at any point of time.
That could affect you adversely, positively or anyway. Now that attention Ive had all my time. I know its there Im made aware of it but I dont necessarily experience it all the time. Except perhaps on stage. Right from childhood Ive received that extra glance but honestly its never become an issue.
Ive never understood why Ive been called cold
It may be that the image I present appears cold. Most people, once theyve met me, do discard that opinion but Ive decided that there must be something about me which makes people say Im cold and mysterious and difficult to understand.
On the contrary Ive always loved being with people so theres this ambivalence but instead of trying to decipher it, Ive decided to sit back and enjoy it.
Over the span of a decade Ive interviewed Aishwarya Rai on various facets of herself. Here I reproduce her take on herself which is interesting because it so closely matches what others say about her.
It shows that she doesnt suffer from any great illusions about herself but neither is she being unduly modest.
Now that she enters a new phase of life, one can see that she probably will enjoy domesticity as much as she enjoys celebrityhood if shes given a chance to play housewife.
It is amply clear that she gives her best shot to most things she does and one assumes shell do the same to her new role as wife and homemaker

An obsessed Aishwarya Rai fan has been harassing designer Neeta Lulla for a replica of the actresss bridal outfits
When Neeta Lulla designed Aishwarya Rais mehendi and wedding outfits recently, little did she know that a crazy fan would love the outfits so much she would harass Lulla every single day to design the same outfits her own wedding!
Fan frenzy
http://www.mid-day.com/ArticleImages/images92/ash-abhi2505.jpgSays Neeta, Im often invited as a guest lecturer to various fashion institutions across India, and at one such event organised by the International School of Fashion Designing (ISFD) in Surat, I came across a girl called Kaveri.
She had come with a strange request and I brushed it off the first time.
Later, she came and met me in Ahmedabad too.
Her request? She wanted the same peach-coloured lehenga and golden yellow sari that Ash had worn at her mehendi and wedding ceremonies!
Kaveri has told Neeta that she is getting married in the next few weeks and is willing to shell out any amount for a replica of the outfits.
Says Neeta, I had to refuse. Its our policy to never duplicate bridal outfits. Its a one-of-a-kind outfit for a bride on her special day.
Its irritating
http://www.mid-day.com/ArticleImages/images92/Neeta2505.jpgHarrowed: Neeta Lulla But Kaveri doesnt want no for an answer, and now the harassment has started. Says Neeta, She came to meet me again in Nagpur and created a scene there.
She said she would do anything to have the same design and shes been at it consistently. She is a hardcore fan of Ash and just has to have the same outfits!
She calls my showroom, office and home. Initially, I smiled it off but now its become irritating. I have finally stopped taking her calls. Its very weird and harrowing.
Neeta, who is extremely pleased by the reaction her outfits have got, says she hasnt met Ash and told her about the fans obsession.
I am very happy about the reaction but this is the first time that so much pressure has been put on me by a crazy fan, says the designer who has designed the entire look and done the styling for Ashutosh Gowarikers Jodha Akbar.
Money matters
The golden yellow sari that Ash wore at the wedding cost over a lakh. The Kanjeevaram sari was selected by Ash herself, but Neeta reworked it using Swarovski crystals and pure gold threads.
At the mehndi, she wore a peach-coloured lehenga with full threadwork. There was no jewellery. Ash used only fresh flowers as accessories.

After having been crowned as Miss World, Ash (as she is fondly called), has now been announced as the first Goodwill Ambassador for Smile Train, the world's largest cleft charity. As a part of this Ambassadorship, Ash will partner with Smile Train, in association with her own charity (Aishwarya Rai Foundation), in numerous ways to spread awareness and garner recourses to help the worldwide movement.
Aishwarya will work with Smile Train to achieve an ambitious new goal in helping change the lives of over one million children worldwide who suffer from shame and isolation because of cleft lip and cleft palate. As the Goodwill Ambassador, Aishwarya will actively work to help Smile Train to provide free cleft surgery to children in 78 developing countries around the world, including India. This initiative will help raise awareness in India and around the world to the plight of children born with cleft. Talking about this association, the ever-so-gorgeous Aishwarya said, "God has given me plenty of reasons to smile and I feel it's time to spread it around. There are a lot of children out there who so desperately need help, but can't receive timely care because their families cannot afford this surgery or are ill-educated about this condition. Working with Smile Train, if I can make a difference in their lives, it will certainly make me feel honored and blessed."
With Aishwarya coming on board, Brian Mullaney, President- Smile Train, said, "Aishwarya's universal appeal and star power will be a priceless asset to our organization, and we consider it a great privilege to have her represent our organization, which does such important work in every corner of the globe," said. "I look forward to working with her. Her poise, intelligence and dedication to our mission will catapult the work that we do to new and exciting heights."
Karan Johar keen to work with Ash
By IANS, 14 January, 2010

If grapevine is to be believed, Karan Johar is toying with the idea of finally working with Aishwarya Rai, with whom he hasn't made a single project in his over decade-long career.
"Karan said that Aishwarya is his ideal heroine and all the scripts that he writes are keeping her in mind. He also said that various reasons have veered them from working together. But he is hoping that it is the right time that he gets her to work in his production sometime soon, a source, who overheard Karan's conversation with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, told IANS on condition of anonymity.
The two filmmakers were discussing Aishwarya at Sonali Bendre's birthday party Dec 31.
"Sanjay Leela Bhansali was overheard telling Karan Johar that Aishwarya is very original and there is no one like her. He further said that if a director has not worked with her in his or her career, it's a big loss for them. Sanjay also praised her work in 'Guzaarish', the source said.

Recently in an annual survey titled 'Top 50 Most Desirable Woman in the World' conducted by one of the leading men's portal had Ash at the 48th spot while popular American singer Beyonce rounds the list off on the 50th position. The survey which asked voters to select their ideals on the basis of intelligence, charisma and ambition was topped by American actress Eva Mendes. Some other prominent names on the list were Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson, Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, Heidi Klum and Jessica Alba.
Surely Ash has once again made us proud and confirmed that her winning streak will go on and on...no matter what people pronounce about her.
Kudos to Ash! Wish the most desirable woman a hearty congrats.
Cancellation of Akki-Ash's romantic song shoot further delays Action Replayy
By Subhash K. Jha, March 4, 2010 - 11:28 IST
Vipul Shah's schedules for Action Replayy seem to be going awry for no fault of anybody's. First it was his principal actors' choc-a-block schedules that delayed the film. Now when the film had just two more songs to be filmed, Vipul is again left high and dry. And it's not his to question why. Because this time it's the weather gods who are to blame.
The song was to be shot in Manali. "And who would have thought there would be snow in Manali in February? It has never happened before!" marvels Vipul. "We had planned the whole song schedule for a time when we were sure there would be no inclement weather. When we got to know there was heavy snowfall we were stunned. There was no way we could shoot," says Vipul who now needs to find alternative dates for the Manali song.
Easier said than done, considering how busy Aishwarya and Akshay are. Rather than delay the release of the film further Vipul may drop the song completely. "We shot one 1970s-style romantic number a solo with Shreya Ghoshal. Now we wanted to shoot a song about a couple romancing in winter like Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz in the song 'Karvaten Badalte Rahen' in Aap Ki Kasam in Manali."
Pritam Chakraborty's brief was to create a raga-based melody, a la the 1970s. Some portions of the track were even recorded with a live orchestra as the composers of the 1970s used to do.
But will this labour of melodious love ever get shot now?
