Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt arrive in Pune

Mumbai Mirror Bureau

Pune is abuzz with rumours of the arrival of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in the city. Apparently the stars made a backdoor entrance at the Le Meridian in Pune last evening.

The star couple are in Pune for the shooting for the film A Mighty Heart which is based on American journalist Daniel Pearl who was slain by the Talibans in Afghanistan. Jolie, Pitt and a few members of their families, arrived at Pune International Airport at about 3 pm by a chartered plane belonging to Raymonds company, airport sources said. They then drove in a fleet of Mercs to the hotel, sources said.

The production unit, besides booking two posh hotels for the Hollywood stars, their family and crew members, have also taken a couple of private bungalows on rent for the shooting of the film.

One of these bungalows belongs to builder Avinash Bhonsale. However, when contacted, his son, Amit Bhonsale said, "Yes, they did ask for permission to shoot at our bungalow. However, they wanted to shoot inside the bungalow. We have not given them permission for that. So most of the shooting will be done at a bungalow in Sindh society."

Pune was chosen for the shoot of the film since part of the landscape of this city bears resemblance to Karachi, where Marianne spent one month from the day she learnt about Daniel Pearl's kidnapping till the day when latter was beheaded by his abductors in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.

The film, scripted by the slain journalist's wife Marianne, is being co-produced by Pitt's production company where Angelina is featuring as Pearl's spouse.

Driving Miss Jolie
The journey from Mumbai, which normally takes 30 mins, took them nearly 1 hr 15 mins

The chartered plane, flying Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, their children (Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh Nouvel), a maid and five bodyguards, landed at the Lohegaon Airport in Pune at 2.50 pm yesterday. Just as the plane landed, three cars — a white Mercedes Benz, a Toyota and a Qualis — rolled on to the tarmac amid a heavy downpour to pick up the passengers.
"We were told to go straight to the tarmac, as it was raining heavily," said Chandrakant More, the driver of the Mercedes.
"The heroine, her children, their bodyguard and a maid got in and we were told to drive straight to the hotel."
Sneaked in
Captain Deepak Shastri, director, Lohegaon Airport, confirmed the arrival of the stars and also said they were headed to the Le Meridien.
Inside the five-star hotel, chaos reigned as the frenzied Indian media and foreign paparazzi — from France, UK, US and even Sweden — tried to find the best spot to capture a glimpse of the stars. But no one managed to see the family enter the hotel.
Jaswinder Narang, the general manager of the hotel, neither confirmed, nor denied the news. However, a source at the hotel later told MiD DAY that Jolie and Pitt used the staff entrance, which passes through the kitchen, to enter the hotel. This entrance is covered from all sides.
Another staff member at the hotel revealed the stars would be occupying five suites on the fifth floor.
The chief chef, Nadir, who spoke to MiD DAY soon after the stars arrived, said they hadn't ordered anything yet, but the kitchen staff had been instructed to attend to their orders immediately.
Resting
When asked about their plans for the day, a member of the production team said it was unlikely they would step out of the hotel, as they were all tired after the long flight.
He also mentioned that the director of the film Michael Winterbottom and some others would be joining them two days later.

Hollywood actors Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's trip to India began with turmoil. The weather played spoilsport during their flight to Pune and the journey, which normally takes about half-an-hour, took them nearly one hour and 15 minutes due to heavy rain and poor visibility.
Private jet
The duo arrived in Mumbai on their private jet, a Gulfstream-5, from France at 11.30 am yesterday. An airport source said, "They were accompanied by their three kids and some assistants. After landing, they cleared customs and immigration and boarded a chartered plane to Pune."
The couple couldn't take their private jet to Pune, as Indian airspace rules don't allow non-scheduled foreign aircraft to land anywhere except for the four metros of the country and Goa. Any further inland air travel has to be done by local aircraft.
"The couple chartered a Challenger aircraft from Millionair, a Raymond group company, and took off from Mumbai at 1.45 pm. Due to poor visibility in Pune, they had to circle the airport for a while before landing a little before 3 pm," said the source.
The duo was whisked away to the Le Meridien hotel. The Pune airport director confirmed their arrival.
According to airport sources, the couple's empty aircraft, which is parked in Mumbai, will be taken to Japan, en route to the US.

Die-hard fans turn bodyguards
Pune boys say they prevented passers-by from touching actress during her rickshaw ride with Brad Pitt and son Maddox

Two Pune youngsters thought it was their personal duty to help Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Die-hard fans Jalaj Pawah and Rupin Verma followed the actors on their 15-minute autorickshaw ride yesterday evening and tried to stop people from touching Jolie. "They are our guests. We didn't like the way the media was chasing them and also the way people were trying to grope them. We drove along side them to shield them. We did what any diehard fan would do," said Verma, a first year student at Symbiosis College.
Said Pawah, "We were waiting near the exit gate of Le Meridien for almost an hour when we saw an autorickshaw come out with six security guards on each side at 6 pm. We followed them through out their journey."
Smiles for media
Pitt and Jolie went for an autorickshaw ride for the second time yesterday.
This time, their son Maddox was with them. They did try to evade the press, but this time most of the media managed to follow them. At the signal near Pune railway station, passers-by realised that the actors were inside the autorickshaw and waved vigorously.
Near Sadhu Vaswani chowk, Pitt looked out of the vehicle and smiled at the media. Here, the bodyguards caught up with the autorickshaw and barred everyone from taking pictures.
Pitt also shook hands with those who were riding close to the rickshaw. Maddox looked a little petrified, but seemed to enjoy the 15-minute ride

MUMBAI: Hollywood star Angelina Jolie caught passengers of a packed commuter train unawares in Mumbai on Monday while shooting for a movie based on a book by slain Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl's widow.

Jolie, filming in India for almost a month with partner Brad Pitt, bought tickets from the Charni Road station and boarded a crowded compartment of a local train to Churchgate with co-actor Dan Futterman.

Disbelieving passengers jostled for a view of the sultry actor -- wearing a green T-shirt and khaki trousers -- but were kept at bay by four of her bodyguards.

There was an immediate commotion inside the train compartment as one passenger shouted: "Hey Kamlesh (a friend), come quick, she's here, she's here" Her bodyguards however prevented college students and eager autograph hunters from getting too close.

Passengers brought out pens and paper for autographs, but they were not allowed near Jolie. There was no police security for the shooting.

Jolie plays the wife of Daniel Pearl, an American journalist who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in 2002, in the film A Mighty Heart. Futterman plays the reporter in the film which is being produced by Pitt.

Angelina Jolie shoots at various locations in Mumbai
16th Nov 2006 09.19 IST

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie on Wednesday shot at various locations in Mumbai, including a McDonald's outlet, for 'A Mighty Heart', a film on slain American journalist Daniel Pearl.

The film, based on a book written by Mariane Pearl, wife of the Wall Street Journal reporter who was abducted and killed in Pakistan four years ago, will continue to be shot in the metropolis over the next one week.

Jolie, who plays Mariane Pearl, shot at the McDonald's outlet at Colaba in south Mumbai and later proceeded to Famous Studios at Tardeo in Central Mumbai for a recording.

The actress, who flew into the city last week after over a month of shooting in Pune, is expected to stay in Mumbai, where Daniel lived for some years, for another week.

Jolie, her partner Brad Pitt and their three children have been under intense media scrutiny ever since they landed in India for the film, being produced by Pitt's company Plan B.

During her shooting schedule in Mumbai, the actress has shot at various locations, including a crowded suburban train and one of the city's busiest markets at Mohammed Ali Road.

Meanwhile, certain sections of the media are incensed for not having been invited them to Jolie’s maiden press conference at a Mumbai hotel Wednesday evening.

In spite of a huge media contingent, which landed at a five-star hotel in South Mumbai after learning of the press conference, only selected mediapersons were allowed to enter the venue.

Hotel officials said the producers of the film wanted only a section of the media to be present at the press conference.

When majority of the media contingent was not allowed to enter the venue, they protested with the hotel authorities but to no avail.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will light up the already sunny boulevards of Cannes next month when they take their place at the annual film festival in the South of France.

The couple will present their film A Mighty Heart out of competition when the fest kicks off on May 16. In the movie, which Pitt's company, Plan B, produced, Jolie plays Mariane Pearl, the widow of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

("The story unfolds like a mystery," Jolie tells Entertainment Weekly. "You've got people collecting clues and trying to solve what happened. But it's also very real and personal. We didn't want it to be too melodramatic or too polished. We didn't want it to be a typical movie.")

Other celebs expected at the 11-day, 60th annual festival range from Jude Law and Leonardo DiCaprio to Jane Fonda, Quentin Tarantino and Bono, festival organizers in Paris said Thursday.

Some highlights:
• Law, Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz and singer Norah Jones will set the red-carpet standard on opening night when they appear for director Wong Kar Wai's romance My Blueberry Nights.

• Pitt himself stars in Ocean's 13, and will be joined in Cannes by George Clooney, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and the rest of the cast for that film's world premiere.

• DiCaprio is due to promote a special screening of the environmental documentary The Eleventh Hour, which he produced and co-wrote with filmmakers Leila Conners Petersen and Nadia Conners.

• Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg will be seen alongside Eva Mendes in director James Gray's gritty crime story, We Own The Night, which already has award buzz.

• Past Palme d'Or winner Michael Moore will present the world premiere of his latest documentary, Sicko, a critique of the U.S. health care system.

• Already generating demand for tickets: the weekend midnight screening of U2 3D, a 3-D film made during the band's most recent Latin American tour. Officials say the film will be shown in a theater specially equipped for the event and the band members will be on hand to greet fans.

• Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Woody Harrelson, Josh Brolin and a posse of other actors are riding in for No Country For Old Men, a sprawling Western adventure from perennial festival invitees Joel and Ethan Coen.

• Taylor Momsen and Gabe Nevins will skate in with director Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park, about a skateboarder who accidentally kills a security guard.

• After the film's lukewarm reception from American audiences, Quentin Tarantino will debut a special, longer version of his Grindhouse episode "Death Proof" alongside stars Rosario Dawson and Kurt Russell.

Unveiling a poster featuring festival veterans Bruce Willis, Penelope Cruz, Samuel L. Jackson and Juliette Binoche, organizers also announced that this year's nine-person jury, headed by The Queen director Stephen Frears, will include actresses Toni Collette, Maria De Medeiros, Maggie Cheung and Sarah Polley
